The Chosen 3 to represent Singapore at the One Million Star 超越星光大道 5 PK challenge

I have just finished the last examinations of my life on Monday!! If everything goes well, I should have completed all the requirements needed to graduate and will be attending my graduation ceremony in September. No more school for me! Will be settling some things first and officially begin my full time working life after I received my cert in September. I should be quite free this few months (will be helping out my Papa and Mama) and will be posting more often (I think). I will also definitely start my daily jogging session either this or next week. Took some photos yesterday with my classmates during our celebration at Hanabi and mindcafe and found out how much I have grown vertically *edit horizontally I mean =P since I completed my poly studies 2 years plus ago. =( More about my graduation celebrations with pics later….

Anyways, Monday’s Wanbao and yesterday's Life section of The Straits Times revealed the 3 contestants who have won the right to represent Singapore at this season’s PK challenge of Taiwan’s version of American Idol / Singapore Idol / Project Superstar, One Million Star. My family and I have been watching One Million Star 超越星光大道 since the first season on Starhub and have enjoyed most of what we have watched. Even more so when a Singaporean does well in the competition like season 3’s Huang Jin Lun 黄靖伦.Even though he didn’t win the competition, he became one of the most popular contestants of that season and even released an album before the winner!

Hey I bought his CD to support support a little okay …he he. Some of the songs inside are nice.
(Proof of purchase)The 3 Singaporean representatives for the PK challenge are Rachel Chua 蔡艾珈, Ng Chee Yang 黄智阳, and Tan Diya 陈迪雅.These 3 challengers are past winners of either Project Superstar or Campus Superstar, all having the credentials to justify their selection. Kelly Poon (winner of first season of Project Superstar) went last season and lost though.

Unlike American Idol, One Million Star is a singing competition based on judges scores, Singapore’s Project Superstar combines both voting and judges scores ha ha. The interesting thing about One Million Star is that every season, they have a PK challenge around the middle of the season where aspiring singers outside of the competition will enter the show to challenge the contestants. It is a one on one challenge and the PK challenger has a chance to actually knock a contestant out of the competition! Past PK challengers have knocked many contestants out and got instant fame. Instead of going through the whole season like the normal contestants, some of these PK challengers got so famous with their limited appearance on the show they got to release their own albums.

Some PK challengers like Jam Hsiao 蕭敬騰 got famous only appearing on 3 episodes. He debut album has since sold more than 80k copies in Taiwan and 8k in Singapore. Here are some videos of him in the competition and MTV.

Another PK challenger who got famous was Alisa 高以爱 who has just released her own album recently.

You can call it a shortcut to fame… some PK challengers who performed well but did not have a chance to release and album actually returned to the competition the next season as actual contestants, most of them doing well in the competition.

Will our 3 representatives be as famous as Jam Hsiao and Alisa? Will they knock any of the contestants off? I think they have the potential too. I just hope they perform to their best of their abilities come the day of the PK challenge.

Too bad Singapore Idol’s runner up, Silvester Sim can’t join them. He is not in the top 3 but is a backup instead. Don’t exactly know what a backup is for, as I think the 3 of them will surely not want to miss this opportunity and will go no matter what happens. I read that the backups can go if they have sponsors who will pay for the air ticket and accommodations. Can they pay for themselves instead? If they can I think the backups should pay for themselves. It is an opportunity not to be missed!

Silverster's very nice song that was pretty famous years ago
